Pelham Humfrey

Pelham Humfrey, born in London in 1647, was a trailblazing English composer and lutenist of the Baroque period. As one of the first Children of the Chapel Royal after the Restoration, he quickly rose to prominence, becoming a leading figure in the musical scene at the court of Charles II. Known for his verse anthems, Humfrey's work is distinguished by its vocal character and the influence of Italian music. Despite his untimely death at the age of 26 in 1674, his compositions left a lasting impact, making him an older contemporary and notable predecessor of the renowned Henry Purcell. Humfrey's legacy continues to captivate audiences with its innovative spirit and enduring beauty.
