Leonardo Balada

Leonardo Balada Ibáñez, born on September 22, 1933, in Barcelona, Spain, is a renowned Spanish-American classical composer whose works are celebrated for their daring and energy. With a deep influence from his native Catalan folk music, Balada's compositions transcend traditional boundaries, offering a unique blend of cultural heritage and contemporary innovation. He studied at the Conservatorio del Liceu in Barcelona and later at the Juilliard School in New York, where he honed his craft under the guidance of notable mentors like Persichetti and Copland. Since 1970, Balada has been a distinguished faculty member at Carnegie Mellon School of Music, where he is now University Professor Emeritus of Composition. His operatic and orchestral works, as well as his chamber music, continue to captivate audiences worldwide, making him an important figure in the history of contemporary music.
