About Mel Powell

Mel Powell, born Melvin Epstein in 1923, was a versatile American musician who left an indelible mark on both jazz and classical music. Starting his career as a prodigy jazz pianist, Powell played and arranged for the legendary Benny Goodman by his late teens. His swing era compositions, such as "Mission to Moscow" and "The Earl," are still celebrated today. Transitioning to classical music, Powell's compositions earned him a Pulitzer Prize, and his educational contributions as the founding dean of CalArts' music department influenced generations.
