Born in New Rochelle, New York, Mintzer has played with legendary artists such as Buddy Rich, Jaco Pastorius, and the Yellowjackets, with whom he has been a member for over two decades. His own Grammy-winning big band showcases his exceptional arranging and composing skills, earning him multiple Grammy nominations and a Grammy Award in 2002 for "Homage to Count Basie."
