About Alex Riel

Alex Riel is a renowned Danish drummer who has left an indelible mark on both the jazz and rock scenes. His career took off when his quintet, featuring the legendary Palle Mikkelborg, won the prestigious Montreux Grand Prix Award at the Montreux Jazz Festival in 1968. Throughout his illustrious career, Alex has collaborated with some of the most esteemed musicians in the industry, including the likes of Kenny Drew, Niels-Henning Ørsted Pedersen, and Bill Evans. His innovative approach to drumming has made him a pioneer in modern European drumming, constantly seeking new challenges and styles. Alex's extensive discography, including notable works like 'Full House' and 'In New York', showcases his versatility and mastery of his craft. Beyond his musical achievements, Alex is also known for his personal life, being married to the acclaimed writer Ane Riel. At 82, Alex Riel continues to be a revered figure in the jazz world, having played with virtually every musician who graced the stages of the legendary Jazzhus Montmartre.
