About Ariel Ramírez

Ariel Ramírez, born in Santa Fe, Argentina, was a towering figure in the world of Argentine folk music and tango. As a composer, pianist, and music director, he dedicated his life to preserving and promoting the rich musical heritage of his homeland. Ramírez's career spanned over half a century, during which he composed over 300 works, blending classical training with the vibrant sounds of Argentine folklore.

His magnum opus, "Misa Criolla" (1964), is a testament to his innovative spirit, setting the traditional Latin Mass text to Argentine folk music. This iconic composition remains one of his most celebrated works, showcasing his unique ability to fuse sacred and secular musical traditions.

Ramírez's journey began at the National Conservatory in Buenos Aires, but his musical curiosity led him to study in Madrid, Rome, and Vienna. Despite his classical training, he remained deeply rooted in the music of the gauchos and creoles, collecting over 400 folk and popular compositions. In 1955, he founded the Compañía de Folklore Ariel Ramírez, further cementing his role as a champion of Argentine folk music.
