Sol Gabetta, one of today's most celebrated cellists, presents a captivating exploration of Felix Mendelssohn's complete works for cello and piano, alongside contemporary compositions, in her latest album. Joined by the esteemed French pianist Bertrand Chamayou, Gabetta delivers a performance that showcases her remarkable virtuosity and deep musical insight.
The album features Mendelssohn's iconic Variations Concertantes, Op. 17, and his two sonatas for cello and piano, Op. 45 and Op. 58, offering a comprehensive journey through the composer's contributions to the cello repertoire. In addition to these masterpieces, Gabetta has commissioned four contemporary composers—Heinz Holliger, Wolfgang Rihm, Jörg Widmann, and Francisco Coll—to create new "Songs Without Words" for cello and piano, providing a modern counterpoint to Mendelssohn's historical works.
With a duration of 1 hour and 24 minutes, this double album is a testament to Gabetta's artistry and her commitment to bridging the gap between classical and contemporary music. Recorded for Sony Classical, the album is set to release on January 19, 2024, and is sure to captivate audiences with its blend of timeless classics and innovative new compositions.
