Born in Omaha, Nebraska, and raised in Texas, Smith spent much of his life in Portland, Oregon, where he honed his distinctive sound. His music is characterized by his delicate, whispery vocals and intricate guitar work, often layered with harmonies and textures created through multi-tracking. Smith's songwriting was deeply personal and poetic, drawing from his own experiences and struggles, including childhood abuse and substance abuse. Tragically, Smith's life was cut short in 2003 at the age of 34, leaving behind a legacy that continues to inspire and resonate with music enthusiasts.
