Suchitra Mitra, born on September 19, 1924, and passing away on January 3, 2011, was a multifaceted Indian artist renowned for her profound contributions to Rabindra Sangeet, the musical compositions of the esteemed poet Rabindranath Tagore. Her career spanned various roles, including that of a singer, composer, and professor, making her a pivotal figure in the cultural landscape of Bengal. Mitra's expertise in Rabindra Sangeet was unparalleled, and she dedicated her life to teaching and performing these timeless songs, earning her the distinction of being the first woman Sheriff of Kolkata. As a professor and Head of the Rabindra Sangeet Department at Rabindra Bharati University until 1984, she nurtured countless talents and authored several books on the subject. Her discography is a treasure trove of beautiful compositions, including iconic works like "Nirlajja," "Chandalika," and "Rabindrasangeet."
