Album Description

Josef Suk's Symphony No. 2 in C minor, Op. 27, "Asrael", is a poignant and powerful work, born out of the composer's deep sense of loss and grief. Written in 1906, the symphony was inspired by the death of Suk's beloved mentor and father-in-law, Antonin Dvorak, and was further infused with sorrow when Suk's wife, Otilie, passed away during the composition process.

This hauntingly beautiful album, released on 4 November 2015 by EXTON, features a stunning performance of Suk's masterpiece, conducted by the talented Jakub Hrusa. The symphony is a testament to Suk's skill as a composer, with its five movements - Andante sostenuto, Andante, Vivace, Adagio, and Adagio e maestoso - showcasing his ability to craft complex, emotionally charged music.

As a leading figure in Czech music, Suk's work is characterised by its intense passion and depth, and "Asrael" is no exception. This album is a must-listen for fans of chamber music, with its rich, evocative soundscapes and nuanced performances. With a duration of one hour, this album is a significant and impactful addition to any music collection, and a fitting tribute to Suk's enduring legacy.
